Training manual sample

Below are some extracts from our Building Confidence and Assertiveness at Work manual.

Understanding Assertiveness

What is Assertiveness? Behaviour that involves standing up for your own rights expressing your needs, wants, opinions, feelings and beliefs in a direct, honest way without violating another person's rights. Assertiveness Triangle Functional Dysfunctional Flight Fight Inward Outward.

Passive Behaviour

Looks like • Avoiding eye contact • Slumped shoulders • Fiddling with pen • Moving back/leaning away • Isolates from the group • Little or no expression

Sounds like • Quiet voice • Not saying anything at all • Making excuses • Does not state opinion • Overly apologetic • Agrees with everything

Feels like to you • Frustration • Confusion • Pity • Loss of respect • They lack direction or interest

Aggressive Behaviour

Looks like • Fists • Loud voice • Intimidation • Big gestures • Interrupts and talks over • Frown • Sharp tone • No eye contact or glares and stares • Demanding • Shaking head • Intimidating expression • Not listening • Inconsiderate • Controlling

Communication Skills

Unspoken Communication

Actual meaning of words 7% • Tone of voice 38% • Body language/non-verbal 55%.

Body language • Eye contact • Gestures • Posture • Nodding/shaking of head • Facial expressions

Para-verbal • Tone • Pitch • Volume • Intonation • Emphasis

DESC – An Assertiveness Model

D – When you spoke to me like that

E – I found it very inappropriate and disrespectful

S – Please can you consider how you speak in future

C – so that we can work better together

The Disagreement Process

The Affirmative Statement • Yes, I'd love to help you with that

The Softening Statement • I can see that you've got a lot on your plate

State Reasons • Looking at my schedule though, I have a lot of deadlines to meet today

Disagree • So, I won't have time to help you today

Compromise/Alternatives • I could fit in some time tomorrow morning if that works?

Building Confidence Habits

What does confident look like?

Positive Journalling

• 5 things that made me feel peaceful today

• I felt proud of myself when ...

• I enjoyed ...

• My friends and family admire me for ...

• 3 small successes I had today were ...

• The highlight of my day was ...

Knowing what to do when we lack confidence

Don't overthink and talk yourself out of it.

Positive selftalk and critical selftalk

• What are you saying to yourself?

• How does that voice sound?

• Are there any core/repetitive phrases?

Positive selftalk

Be positive rather than affirming what you don't want. Go with your gut; if it clicks, then just say it. Self‑talk should feel positive, expanding, freeing and supporting.

SelfAcceptance

Accepts that there is no objective basis for defining self‑worth and that we are all different yet equal. No need to compare to others so is satisfied with self despite external factors. Allows self to be as it is.
