Remote access

Can you explain remote access and how it applies to creating a website?

RE: Remote access

Hi Ebony

Thank you for your question. You can set up Remote site information when you create a new Site (using the Site menu) or editing a site (Site > Manage sites)

The remote site is usually the computer that will hosts your pages and serves them to your website visitors. If your website is designed for people outside your organisation this will mostly be hosted on a computer that is accessible to the public internet.

In the Remote section of the site dialogue box you can specify how you will connect to your remote site. Depending on the connection type you select Dreamweaver will ask for the path to reach the computer and any log in credentials needed.

Dreamweaver has a feature that allows you to synchronise the files on your local site with those on the public remote site.

To access them look in the Files panel on the right side of Dreamweaver. At the end of the icons at the top of the Files panel is a button that expands the File panel to fill the screen. After clicking it you can begin the synchronisation process by clicking on the circular icon made up of a blue arrow and a green arrow. After clicking the synchronise button Dreamweaver will prompt you with the kind of synchronisation it is about to run. By default it offers to only put newer local files onto the remote website. You can if you want change this option to put all the local files online (great if you want to copy your local website to the public server for the first time).

Clicking on the preview button produces a list of files and the action Dreamweaver will carry out (PUT the file on the remote site or GET a copy of the file from the remote site and replace your local copy). Proceeding with the synchronisation will then carry out the listed actions.

I hope this helps - do let us know if you have any further questions.

Kind regards,
Andrew

Dreamweaver tip:

Xhtml vs html

When using dreamwear template or just creating a blank webpage, you are able to select the markup language you want to use. The main choices are either xhtml or html. It is now best to select xhtml as this will translate all the html into xml, so it is transmitted across the web in xml format. One of the main advantages of this is that it makes the site that you build much more compatible with the range of different web browsers that exist.
