Many websites are used as advertising platforms for businesses but unlike traditional commercials, such as billboards, an internet portal can be constantly adapted to suit your company.

Adobe Dreamweaver's InContext Editing function ensures that you can instantly make adjustments to your internet portal. This can help your website to remain current and up-to-date by allowing you to change it whenever you feel the need. For instance, you may want to add new images or change the colour of the font to fit in with new themes. As well as giving you the opportunity to make adaptations where necessary, the InContext Editing application can also help to protect your finished work against unwanted changes.

This is because web developers are able to define which parts of the portal they are happy to have updated, which can prove useful if you have created a site that will be overlooked by colleagues who may accidentally delete information that you wish to keep. Once these parameters have been set up, colleagues will have to enter a password if they wish to use the function to add or change the look of the website. Depending on your company it may be necessary to alter text regularly, for instance you may like to publish a daily blog. On the other hand you might only need to use the InContext Editing function infrequently to change and update information such as email addresses.

All this is possible via Dreamweaver, meaning that your portal can organically adapt to the needs of your company. Once you have entered Edit mode while using InContext Editing, you will be able to see the areas that you can make changes to. These may include sections of text, which will be marked out in a box. You are free to delete, add or replace present data with new information, if you prefer. As well as simply replacing text, the Edit mode enables you to modify many different aspects of new material you wish to include in your updated portal. For example, new paragraphs may require indenting and changes to font colour and size may be needed, all of which can be done via the software.

In addition you may find that images are included in the defined areas, which can give you greater control over the look of your portal. Another useful area that may be highlighted in order for you to make changes are hyperlinks. Many websites link to others or contain email addresses for correspondence. Over time portals may stop functioning and email addresses change but Adobe Dreamweaver allows you to add and delete hyperlinks that are no longer working so your website does not direct internet surfers to inactive locations.

After you have browsed the pages of your portal and made all the necessary changes you then have a number of options for applying them to the site, depending on InContext Editing's settings. If you have full editor and publisher functions activated you have a greater control over the publication of your alterations. For example, you may preview them and decide that they are not necessary, in which case you are free to delete the modifications and continue making edits until you are happy with them. By signing out of editor mode the changes are saved and you can choose to add them to the site at a later date or if you are satisfied you website is sufficiently updated you can simply press the Publish icon and your updates will instantly appear on your portal.
