Work Groups views

I have set up to workgroups - Admin and users. Can these two groups when opening the database have different views? i.s as an administrator I see all the buttons on the swithboard but as a user I only see 2 that have relevance to me. Or can one only restrict permissions to the different areas in that they can only review/edit etc.?

RE: Work Groups views

Access allows you to specify many settings, depending on your experience and skill level. Simple solutions are sometimes the best, until you can figure out a way to do it more effectively with deeper understanding.

Withuout using Groups:
Without using security, you could have a standard switchboard that appears for all users on loading the database. You could then have a separate switchboard that you need to activate manually as the administrator. (By hiding the database window - Tools > Startup). F11 shows the window.

With using groups:
You can specifiy object level security if you have the time and knoweldge to implement effectively without compromising the rest of your database. Essentially the switchboard is just another form, so you could allow users to interact with the basic form, and then have a secodary switchbaord linked to the primary that has administrator functions, but is locked out to normal users.

RE: Work Groups views

thank you, I would like to do it with groups as I have already set them up, I understand the objects security levels but how do I distinguish between secondary and primary switchboard? I can't seem to create 2 switchboards?

RE: Work Groups views

In the switchboard manager, you will see on the first steop of the interface, the first switchboard name. Simply add a secondary switchboard, and link between primary and secondary (both ways).

Then set permissions on those two forms as you see fit.

RE: Work Groups views

Not sure if I am totally being stupid but so I set another swithboard page? Ie a User switchboard page and an administrator one and link them as I would the form page or report page etc.?
In the permissions though the swtchboard comes up as one form so besides setting permissions that thye can't view the reports I can't seem to set the permission to not allow access to administrators switchboard?

RE: Work Groups views

Jane, appologies. The switchboard comes as one form, as apposed to two separate ones that can be independantly assigned security.

Not sure what the fastest or best way of getting around that is, however, I propse the following:

Build 2 separate forms from scratch, that have command buttons and macros attached to open / switch to various objects. That way you would have complete control over the two forms, and where they link to.
Esentially you are building the switchboard manually.
Then assign security to two separate forms.

RE: Work Groups views

Thank you, that is brillaint - I ended up just building the user switchboard, very simplistic and then kept my main switchboard as the administrators one and linked the two.
Thanks!

Access tip:

Remove spaces in a table

If you have a table that has too many space marks littered around, you can create a update query and use the trim function to get rid of any excess space marks
