RE: How can I uncorrupt a file

Hello Charlotte,

I'm sorry to hear about your file issue. Please try the following solutions:

Automatic Repair (File Recovery Mode):
When you open a corrupted workbook in Microsoft Excel, it automatically starts File Recovery mode and attempts to repair the workbook.

If File Recovery mode doesn’t start automatically, follow these steps:
Open Excel (Just the app, not the corrupt file) > Click File > Open.
Navigate to the location and folder containing the corrupted workbook.
Select the corrupted workbook.
Click the arrow next to the Open button, and then choose Open and Repair.
If successful, this method will recover as much of the workbook data as possible.

Manual Repair:
If automatic repair doesn’t work, you can try these manual methods:

Revert to the Last Saved Version:
If the workbook became corrupted before you saved your changes, you can revert it to the last saved version:
Click File > Open.
Double-click the name of the workbook you have open in Excel.
Click Yes to reopen the workbook. It will open without any changes you made that might have caused corruption.

I hope this helps.

Kind regards
Marius Barnard

Excel tip:

Sum Up All the Values in A Column

If you want to quickly calculate the Summed values of all cells in a column in Excel 2003 normally you would use the SUM formula. (eg if you wanted to calculate the values in Column C rows 10 to 25) the formula would be:

=SUM(C10:C25)

However, if you keep adding values to column C you would keep having to modify the above SUM formula which can get quite annoying.

To get around this you can sum all the values in a column using the following formula:

=SUM(COLUMN:COLUMN)

Which, in our example, would be:

=SUM(C:C)

NOTE You cannot place this formula in column C, or else Excel 2003 will show a circular reference error.

The formula must be placed in any other column, EXCEPT the one being calculated.
