I have a cell which I have allocated drop down choices, I want those to be traffic light coloured, so that they change dependant of which choice is made - how do I do that?

I also have other cells where I want the sum if between 1 - 5 to be traffic light coded so:

1=red
2=amber
3=amber
4=green
5=green

how do I do that please?

Thanks,
Cath

RE: Fuctions

Hello Catherine,

Thank you for your post. For the first part of your question, select the cell(s) containing the drop-downs. In the Home tab, select Conditional Formatting. Select Highlight Cells Rules, then select Text that Contains. In the box, type in the first drop-down option, then click the drop-down where you set the formatting. You could either use the quick red, yellow or green options, or select Custom Format for more options.

Because there is more than one item in your in-cell drop-down, you need to create a separate rule for each item.

As for the numbers, you would follow a similar process. Select the cells showing the numbers, then go to Conditional Formatting, Highlight Cells Rules, Equal To. Here you create five rules, one for each possible value (1 to 5). Again, for each rule, set the relevant colour.

I hope this helps.

Kind regards

Excel tip:

Turn off AutoComplete in Excel

You may have noticed when typing into your spreadsheets that if you start to enter labels that begin with the same letters as a label that has been previously entered in the same spreadsheet, Excel will try and automatically complete the text for you. This feature is called AutoComplete.

If you find this feature more annoying than useful, you can turn it off by:

1. Going to Tools - Options.

2. Select the Edit tab.

3. Remove the tick from next to the "Enable AutoComplete for cell values" option.

4. Click OK.
