Entering percentage onto resource sheet

I want make a resource work on a task for 5% of his time but after I have input the initial ammount of time he spend on this in days, can I add the workload as a %?
Background:
I have a task with 2 resources loaded on to work for 20 days for a month long task. The task has now been extended and I want to add just 1 of the resources for the next month. I have been told the reosurce will spend 5% of his time on this task. Is there no way to add the resource to the task for 5% for month 2 only? I know initally i can add the workload in % but it was entered in days.

To reflect the 5% for month 2, I am going into the resource usage sheet and trying to input what 5% of a month is in days for the second month. Is this the only way to do this? Thanks

RE: Entering percentage onto resource sheet

Hi Emma

thank you for your interesting question. I can appreciate how this might be causing a problem.

You are right that the usage view lets you contour the assignment to reflect each resource. I could imagine one option being to assign both resources to the two month task and zeroing out the entries for the resource that moves off the task at the end of month one.

Another approach, given the length of the task is to split it into two separate months making it easier to manage the change in assignment.

You may find double clicking on the task name helpful in resource usage as it lets you set the units of assignment for this task and resource. Again this could be handy if the task were split into two separate activities.

Lastly on also the resource usage view you might add in (right click on the table on the right side of the view and choose Detail Styles and from the dialogue box select Percent Allocation which shows you the calculated assignement percentage for this task. It is a calculated field, rather than an entry field.

Let me know how you get on and we can explore this further.

Kind regards,
Andrew

MS Project tip:

Link tasks using predecessor column - project

a. First, note ID number of the task you want to link to (predecessor). Then, in the predecessor column of the task you want to link to (successor), type the predecessor task's ID number.
b. The link will be a Finish to Start (the default type).
c. Or you can add in a code for a different relationship type
i. SS = Start to Start
ii. FF = Finish to Finish
iii. SF = Start to Finish
d. You don't have to type the task ID numbers in any specific order, but you must separate multiple tasks with commas.
