Make selection of cells with a condtion change cell colour

Can you select a column and can certain cells in that column be changed to a particular colour if for example the cell is great then 10 or less then 3?

Yes it is called conditional formating. we cover it in Intermediate level.

Choose format/conditional format
choose cell value greater than 10 then click on Format button and select the colour you want it to change to.

In a blank worksheet, type the birth date in cell A1, using slashes to separate day, month, and year.
