Changing design theme

Hi Max. I have a question already! I have a custom theme which I believe I have saved correctly. However the changes don't appear to effect an existing slide deck which I am urgently trying to change to a branded /custom template design. Help!

RE: Changing design theme

Hi Tracy

Thanks for your question.

Unfortunately, even if you create a custom template, save it in the right place and apply it correctly, it is common to come across issues in updating the design of your deck. This is usually because of the way the original deck was created. If it was created correctly using the 'layouts', then all the slides will change when you change the theme. But if it's been made more manually, maybe by inserting blank slides and adding text boxes, or even using layouts but then manually overriding the theme by formatting manually, it will not automatically update.

This is frustrating, but normal. I find the quickest way to get around this is to create a new presentation using the new theme, and to copy and paste the content over from the old presentation into the proper layouts. This might seem time-consuming, but means that your presentation is then all formatted correctly and any future changes are quick and easy to make by simply changing the layout or even the slide master.

Hopefully this answers your question, please let us know if you need any more help.

Kind regards,

Sarah

RE: Changing design theme

Hi Tracy,

Sorry it's taken a few days to get to your question.

Was your slide deck already created when you put your theme together?

If so then you need to apply your new theme to your existing presentation. You do this on the design tab of the ribbon. If you open up the themes gallery you will see the MS thmes and your custom themes. Click on your custom theme and it will apply to your presenation.

If it doesn't show in the gallery there is a browse button at the bottom of that menu where you can bring it into your theme gallery so you can apply it.

Let me know if you have any problems.

Claire

PowerPoint tip:

Controlling alignment and spacing between shapes in PowerPoint

Instead of trying to align shapes exactly or space shapes an even distance apart from each other by dragging them manually on the screen, use features from the Drawing toolbar to align or space shapes perfectly.

Both the Align and the Distribute features can be found by clicking the 'Draw' button on the Drawing toolbar.

The Align feature allows you to align shapes along the top, bottom, left, right or middle edges or positions.

The Distribute feature will automatically adjust the position of shapes to create an even amount of space between them, either vertically or horizontally.

Before using either of these features, you need to select the shapes you wish to align or distribute on your slide. This can be done by clicking on one shape, holding down the Shift key and continuing to hold Shift down while you click the other shapes you want to select.
