OneDrive permissions sharing (again)

hi

I have a folder in OneDrive I share with a wider team.

I'm looking to find the simplest way set up permissions only once and only once at the folder level, and be able to share files within without creating any other sets of rules.

And: when sharing, can I use the folder

I thought (very simply) that file permissions = folder permissions cascaded down.

If I click on the shared icon for the folder I have created, and then "Advanced" under the shared Manage Access panel that opens on the right it takes me to the permission page.
I seem to have ended with multiple rules, and I can't always work out if it refers to a file or the folder itself.

I can see a list of users I've given permission, but another list of the same names with different permissions under a section heading:

"Users who have permission through a sharing link (manage links to remove users):"
I can't understand but a person can appear here with "Read Only" but also in the main list with "Edit" as well.

I think this is because I have sent links to files - although I thought that would be the folder level permissions.

Thanks
James

RE: OneDrive permissions sharing (again)

Hi James,

We'd recommend using SharePoint or Microsoft Teams for shared folders rather than OneDrive itself but this is still achievable - all 3 types use the SharePoint permission structure.

The folders all inherit permissions from the one above, unless you manually send links. You then create duplicate permissions if you send a link with edit rights when you only invited them to be

Inviting by links is good for external users - set the permissions

Inviting by links - use already have access links to avoid creating duplications.

Does that help answer your question?

RE: OneDrive permissions sharing (again)

If I understand this, it's because I granted access, but separately also sent links, which might have had different permissions.

I know why this happened - I gave someone permission, but because they didn't access for a while I separately reminded them to look at the content via an email with a link.

So in this case, if someone has been given access to a folder but doesn't know how to locate it, how do I point them without sending a link? ... is it automatically in their own OneDrive?

thanks
James

RE: OneDrive permissions sharing (again)

Hi James,

If they log in to their OneDrive, and click on Shared
It has a list of Shared by me and Shared with me.

This should help everyone keep track of the shares
I've attached a screenshot to show you where to click, hope that helps.
