Headings

Hi,

I'd like to create a table of contents for my PhD thesis. I've assigned the style Heading 1 to my Headings and created a table of contents. This has worked fine, however, I'd like to include a numbering system in my headings. By this I mean I would like to have for instance:

1 Introduction
1.1 An introduction to the telomere
1.1.1 The structure of the telomere
1.1.2 The function......
2 Materials and Methods
2.1 Chapter 1
2.1.1 DNA extraction

and so on.

I can see that if I click the arrow next to Heading 1, then go to modify, then go to format, and select numbering and go to define number format - I can change the numbering format to 1.1, but then it thinks I want to have 1.1, 2.1, 3.1 etc instead of 1.1, 1.2 etc

Could you explain how I can set this up?

Many thanks,

Kara

RE: Headings

Hello Kara

Thank you for your question.

It's actually rather straight ward to do what you've asked. Here are the steps.

1. Highlight the entire table of contents
2. On the Home ribbon, in the Paragraph group, select Multilevel list and choose the desired list style.

If your sub headings have been created properly as sub headings or Heading styles 1,2,etc, you will see the outcome you desire straight away.

If not, click at the beginning of what should be a sub heading and press the Tab key on your keyboard. This will indent across and make a sub heading.

Hope this helps but if you require further assistance on this matter, feel free to send the document to me.

RE: Headings

Hi Cindy,

Thanks for your response.

I've done as you have suggested, however, it's still not coming out quite as I had hoped. For example if I have a sub-heading 1.3 and then I want to create a further sub-heading under this, instead of reading 1.3.1, it inserts 1.1.1

Can you suggest how I can fix this?

Thanks

Kara
