How do I set up a contents page so that when I change the title of one of the contents, the header in the main body of the document automatically changes as well (or vice versa)?

I have a big document that I am currently trying to update and some of the contents headers have changed. However, I have to trawl through the document to find the header in the main body of the document and change that as well.

Thanks

RE: Word

Hi Katherine

Thanks for getting in touch. You can achieve this by creating a Table of Contents in Word.

There is a little bit of setup required first but it's worth it in the long run. First you need to go through your document and apply a Style to all of your headings. This should be a Heading 1 or Heading 2 style. You can find these on the Home tab.

If you have already defined the look of your headings then right-click the Heading style and choose Update Heading 1 to match selection.

Once you have tagged all your styles, go the point in the document where you would like the table of contents.

Then go to References > Table of Contents. Follow the on-screen prompts to create your TOC. When you change a heading in the document, right-click the Table of Contents and choose Update. Your table should be refreshed with the latest text.

There's a few steps here but it's well worth the effort.

Hi Gary

Thank you very much for these set of instructions.

I will have a go at it this week and see how I get on.

Many thanks

RE: Word

Hi

Thanks for your reply. You should try it out on a test document first to see how it works.

I've attached a sample so you can get the idea.
