Work v Duration

Can you tell me what is the difference between work and duration and why is the duration shown in part days, ie 22.45?

RE: Work v Duration

Hi Andy

Thank you for your question. Duration records the amount of time allowed for an activity whereas the Work figure records the effort that takes place. For example we might allow 5 days to prepare a report and know that the actual report writing will be 4 hours. It's just that the 4 hours Work will take place over 5 days Duration.

MS Project can track Work and Duration in minutes but that is usually not very useful. Generally Work is measured in hours and Duration in days. Depending on how resources have been assigned to a task, and their calendar availability, you may find Project calculates part days. Check to see if assigned resources have part day availability. The other think to look for is lag added between tasks that has been set to % value rather than whole day(s)

I hope this helps - do let me know if you have any further questions.

Kind regards,
Andrew

MS Project tip:

Inserting Task Durations Quickly

When entering durations for your tasks simply use the single letters - m for min, h for hr, d for day, w for week, but mon for month. If default is set for days, you need only type the number, for example 3 for 3days, or 0.5 for half a day.
