VLook up - named range from a separate workbook

Excel 2003
Hi,
I am looking at Vlookup.
How can I look up / retrieve specific data contained in one excel file to populate specific fields in a different spreadsheet (file)?
Is it possible to create a named range in a spreadsheet that relates (ie links) to a different spreadsheet?
Thank you

RE: VLook up - named range from a separate workbook

Hi Paul,

Thank you for the question.

Vlookup:

Yes you can retrieve specific data from another workbook using the Vlookup function. Open both workbooks, create the function and when you need to add the Table_array range navigate to the source workbook and select the range. This will create an active link to the source file.

Range Name:

Named ranges in a worksheet are available in the whole workbook and also in other workbooks. If you want to refer to a named range in another workbook you must type the name of the workbook in Apostrophes and then Exclamation mark and then the range name.

see example 'workbookName.xls'!RangeName

I hope that this is what you need.

Kind regards

Excel tip:

Closing all your workbooks Quickly

Hold the SHIFT key down and using the mouse click on the file menu, it will now now CLOSE ALL rather than close. This closes all workbooks down but still leaves the application open.
