Critical Paths

How do I set a critical path?

Can it be confirmed that this is for identifying potential weakness in my project timings?

RE: Critical Paths

Hi Mark

Thank you for your question. MS Project calculates the critical path for you automatically. In essence it highlights those tasks that determine when your Project will finish that have no float. This means that if you delay critical tasks you wll also delay your project. Whilst there is nothing wrong with tasks that are critical if your entire plan is critical then any change at any point will impact when the plan finishes.

A quick way to see the critical path is to switch to the Tracking Gantt view (View > Tracking Gantt)

I hope this helps. Do let us know if you have any further questions.

Kind regards,
Andrew

MS Project tip:

Autofit column width – Project (all versions)

At the top of the columns where each column name is located (Task Name, Duration, etc.), hover over the vertical column line which you want to move.

A short bold vertical line will appear, with horizontal arrows pointing left and right.

Left click and hold this icon and it will permit you to grab the column line, allowing you to move it left or right to your desired location.
