Access introduction

What does primary key do?

RE: Access introduction

Dear Nicky

Thanks for attending the access Intro training. It was a pleasure training you. I hope you enjoyed learning as much as I enjoyed delivering it.

Primary Key, also known as the Key field is a field that is unique. This means that the data within this column (field) does not duplicate. Some examples could be Account No. in a Bank, Customer Id, Suppliers ID, and ISBN of a book. All these fields will have a unique data value where no two entities will have the same data and, therefore, it makes it unique.

The main purpose of a primary key is to help establish relations ships between two or more tables.

I hope I have answered your question. When you do intermediate or Advanced training in Access you'll learn different types of relationships such as One-to-one, One-to-many, and many-to-many. Also you'll learn of various types of joins such as Outer joins, Inner joins and self joins, etc...

If above mentioned doesn't answer your query then please don't hesitate to ask further clarification!!

Many thanks

Access tip:

Action queries

Unlike select queries you cannot use action queries as a data source for the use with forms or reports,as they do not return a dataset that can be read.
