Is it possible to link between different projects?

RE: MS Project

Hi Genevieve - thanks for posting a question.

Yes, linking projects is in fact very straight forward. First create a blank project then from the insert menu choose insert project...

do this for each project you wish to link. In the combined project click and drag between the successors and predecessors. You can double click on the FS links you create to change to other kinds of relationship and / or add lag and lead time.

When you have finished you can either keep the temporary project as an overview as it will be updated when individual files are changed or discard it knowing that changes in the individual projects will now adjust their linked tasks in the other files.

I hope this is helpful, kind regards,

Andrew

MS Project tip:

Typing Links Between Tasks

In the Entry table, use the Precessors column to type in links. Type the previous task's ID to link. To change the link, add FS (Finish-Start), FF (Finish-Finish), and so on, and + duration to add a Lag, or - duration for a Lead time. Example: for task 5, 4FS+1w ... task 4 preceeds task 5, finish to start, with a week lag between.
