CSS and Templates

Why is using CSS pages better than using templates? I have set up our company website with templates and need to know if I should change it all over.

RE: CSS and Templates

Hi Joanna

What I think you mean is do you use CSS pages or a html template. Currently there are a number of ways to build a website, these are:

To use html pages with a CSS for style
To use CSS for style and page layout and html for content
To just use html pages

Using CSS for style and page layout is a relatively new area. There is no right or wrong way to build a website. By using a html template a lot of the layout and style is already created for you, you can also get CSS templates which do the same thing.

One of the main advantages of using CSS is that is becomes more browser compatible, so you should experience as many problems as html being displayed in FireFox or opera web browsers.

You may like to consider using xhtml pages with a CSS, this means that by using xhtml you will minimise browser compatibility issues and you can contain all of you style details in the CSS.

Basically in the current time, you can use which every method you like to code your websites, but using a combination of xhtml and css is probably the most sensible at this time.

In relation to template, these are just web page designs that have already been created for you, you can either use them or create your own web page designs from scratch.

Hope this helps

David

Dreamweaver tip:

Xhtml vs html

When using dreamwear template or just creating a blank webpage, you are able to select the markup language you want to use. The main choices are either xhtml or html. It is now best to select xhtml as this will translate all the html into xml, so it is transmitted across the web in xml format. One of the main advantages of this is that it makes the site that you build much more compatible with the range of different web browsers that exist.
