Desktop versus App

Hi there, my company has licenced the app version of MSP for our use, and it has notably less features than the desktop version we were trained on for the course. Do you have any advice for enabling more features, or harnessing the app version for better usability?

RE: Desktop versus App

Hi Hayley,

Thank you for your question. It is true that Project Online has fewer features than the desktop version. However, there are a few things you can try to get more out of Project Online

Check your subscription plan:
Ensure that you have subscribed to the right plan that offers the features you need. You can check the feature availability across plans, standalone options, and on-premises solutions in the Project Online service description.

Add custom fields:
In addition to the fields that are included with Project, you can also use custom fields to meet your organization’s needs. You can add custom fields to tasks, resources, and assignments. You can also create formulas to calculate custom fields based on other fields in your project.

Use add-ins:
You can find new applications for Project in the Office store. These add-ins can help you with various aspects of project management, such as scheduling, resource management, and reporting.

Explore Project Online’s core functionality:
Project Online provides powerful project management capabilities for planning, prioritizing, and managing projects and project portfolio investments.

You can use the Backstage to manage your project files and the data about them and use contextual right-click menus to get instant access to what you can do with that item. You can also present project information graphically using Gantt chart, Network Diagram, graph, sheet, usage, and form views.

I hope this helps!

Kind regards

MS Project tip:

Using the Quick Access Toolbar in Project 2010

The Quick Access Toolbar is included in virtually every Office product, including Project 2010 as well as Outlook 2010, Word 2010, Excel 2010, and PowerPoint 2010.

You will find the Quick Access Toolbar in the top-left side of the window. To begin, click the Customize button (it's the little black arrow at the end of the toolbar).

Simply click the commands you want to include.

Virtually any command can be added to the Quick Access Toolbar. Click the More Commands option and a new window will open from where you can browse the commands including those not on the ribbon.
