Access to site

I am trying to access a client's site. I have the server address, user name (log-in) and password from the guy who built the site and he says I should be able to get full FTP access with these, but I am unable to connect to the site. I have double checked the details with him. Do I need to choose one of the other options on the remote info page or do something else to make it work?
thanks.

RE: access to site

Hi Elaine

I trust that you found you Macromedia Dreamweaver course useful.

My guess is that the FTP address that you are entering in not correct, if you do not have the correct ftp address, then you will not be able to access the server. If you check this is ok and you are still having problems then get back to me. Also may just be worth checking the password infomation is correct, i.e. upper lower case lettering.

Hope this helps
David

RE: access to site

Elaine,

It could also be a firewall on the server is only allowing certain IP addresses (computers) through. You may need a VPN (Virtual Private Network) key.

Check it's not ftp.domain.com or www.domain.com instead of just domain.com for the host.

Also the Host directory field could be important, what does your colleague put in this field?

Try with and without PASV setting, as this can make a difference, depending on the host server.

If you're really stuck, you could try a stand-alone FTP client like WS_FTP or CUTE-FTP and see if you can connect through those. At least you'll know it's the details you've been provided (or firewall issues) and not Dreamweaver itself causing the problem.

Also ask your colleague if he's successfully logged in with the details he gave you. It might be that the FTP user account hasn't been set up properly, and he hasn't tested it?
