Resourcing #1

I have set up a large number of small scale projects. I have also set up a master project which will link all of the individual projects together. Is it better to assign resources to each individual project or to the master project?

RE: Resourcing #1

Hi Bradley

Thank you for your question

Your best bet would be to set up a "Common Resource Pool". You do this by creating a new project file and entering all your resources in to its resource sheet. You then save the file without any tasks. You then open up all your individual project files and tell them to get their resources from the resource pool file (Tools-Resource Sharing-Share Resources)

You can then open a master file whenever you open the resource pool. This will show all the projects together and you can allocate resources there as well as resolve resource overallocations

This is covered in detail on our project intro/intermediate course

RE: Resourcing #1

Thanks very much Stephen.

I have done the course and vaguely remember covering that - but the course was very intensive and my memory is terrible!

MS Project tip:

Compare Work and Duration

Duration is the timescale within which a task is done; Work is the specific time element used. For example, 3 days work in a duration of 2 weeks. To compare, add the Work field into the Entry table by right clicking a column heading to Add Field.
