Microsoft Project

Once a project is baselined how are additional tasks added

RE: Microsoft Project

Simon,

I assume you may wish to add additional tasks and to then baseline them as well. If this is the case you can follow the following steps.

Highlight the newly added tasks by clicking on their ID numbers, the left hand column in any Gantt Chart View. Select any summary tasks you may wish to have these new tasks baseline information added to. You can select non-consecutive tasks by pressing the Ctrl button and then left clicking on the relevant ID numbers.

Having select the relevant tasks go to the Tools menu and select Tracking followed by Save Baseline. In the Save Baseline dialogue box chose the "selected tasks" option and make the appropriate choice in the "Roll up Baselines" section.

You might want to experiment with this approach before applying it to live projects to be assured that it meets your expectations.

Happy planning

Dominic

MS Project tip:

Keep constraining dates to a minimum

As far as possible avoid fixing the dates of your tasks. For example try to steer of clear dragging task bars in the Gantt chart to move them on the timeline or entering dates directly into the Start / Finish fields.

Date constraints such as these limit Microsoft Project's ability to automatically adjust your project whenever you add, remove or modify the duration of your tasks. Instead use the logic in your task dependencies that link your tasks to enable Project to calculate the start and finish dates for you.
