Closing spreadsheets

When I close a spreadsheet in excel it closes down all other spreadsheets that are open on my computer. This occurs even if i have minimised the sheet, meaning it can not be attributed to a sticky key. Any ideas please?

RE: closing spreadsheets

Hi Nick

Thanks for your question.

This might be occuring because you are clicking on the 'X' button to close the Excel program (which will close all Excel files you have open) rather than the 'X' button just to close the file you are working on.

The 'X' button in the very top right of your screen closes all Excel files whereas the 'X' button underneath it closes just the one Excel file.

Let me know if this solves your problem or not.

thanks
Amanda

RE: closing spreadsheets

Thanks for that, it did the job!

thanks for being so quick as well, you've saved me a day's worth of frustration

RE: closing spreadsheets

Hi Nick

No problem, happy to help.

The same applies to closing a program and closing files across all Microsoft applications.

Have a good day
Amanda

Excel tip:

Converting an American date format to European using Formula

Excel depending on your local setting will only pick up date values of the dd mmm yyyy oders as date type. If you import data from various sources including America their date order is different with data value in mmm dd yyyy, excel can only treat it as text indicated by left aligning it. To overcome this you have to do the the following.

1. Extract the date components mmm dd yyyy, by using the the Text functions LEFT, MID or RIGHT

2. Reorder dd mmm component and concatenate using "&" in the right order this will create a text string with the date in the right order it then needss to be converted to a value so excel can recognise it.

3. To convert to value encase in TEXT function.

4. Format to desired date format.
