I had a bit of a look into this using Excel Help, and surprisingly, it's quite useful!

If you look up create custom number formats in Excel Help, then click on the Create or delete a custom number format link then you will find information on this. I think it would be easier for you to look up Help rather than me trying to explain it as it provides quite a logical explanation with a picture as well.
