If I assign tasks in Project, can these appear in the user's Outlook calendar?

to the best of my knowledge this functionality between Project and Outlook does depend on what versions you are using.
Certainly possible for versions of Project 2000 & Outlook 2000, later versions (Project Professional only 2002 & 2003) this functionality has been consolidated into Microsoft's Project Server solutions.

Autofit column width – Project (all versions)

At the top of the columns where each column name is located (Task Name, Duration, etc.), hover over the vertical column line which you want to move.

A short bold vertical line will appear, with horizontal arrows pointing left and right.

Left click and hold this icon and it will permit you to grab the column line, allowing you to move it left or right to your desired location.
