The critical path is used to highlight which task(s) if delayed will have the most significant impact on your projects finish time.

How you best utilise your analysis of the critical path wil very much depend on what tasks you define as critical (ie how much float you set) as well as the linking types between the tasks. In other words, trial and error (simulated!) will lead to experience on the best possible use of crtical path in your specific projects.
