RE: Please can you help me reinstate my 'Format' box in the tool

Hello Fiona,

Thank you for your question.

If your Font group in Excel has disappeared completely from the Home tab, you can easily recreate it:

Click File > Options > Customize Ribbon

On the right-hand side, below the 'Main Tabs' box, click the 'New Group' button.

Then click 'Rename' to rename the new group, and call it Font. This will now show in the list in the box above these buttons.

Next, drag and drop the following items from the box on the left (Popular Commands) into 'Font' on the right:

Font
Font Size
Increase Font Size
Decrease Font Size
Bold
Italic
Underline
Borders
Fill Color
Font Color

These are the default items in the Font group.

The Font group should sit below 'Clipboard' in the list. If not, you can move it using the up and down buttons to the right of the 'Main Tabs' box.

When you're all done, simply click OK.

I hope this helps.

Kind regards
Marius Barnard

Excel tip:

Sum Up All the Values in A Column

If you want to quickly calculate the Summed values of all cells in a column in Excel 2003 normally you would use the SUM formula. (eg if you wanted to calculate the values in Column C rows 10 to 25) the formula would be:

=SUM(C10:C25)

However, if you keep adding values to column C you would keep having to modify the above SUM formula which can get quite annoying.

To get around this you can sum all the values in a column using the following formula:

=SUM(COLUMN:COLUMN)

Which, in our example, would be:

=SUM(C:C)

NOTE You cannot place this formula in column C, or else Excel 2003 will show a circular reference error.

The formula must be placed in any other column, EXCEPT the one being calculated.
