Excel Not Responding - Action Too Large

Hi, i have a file which i have inherited from a colleague.

It has a lot of data and some images etc so it's a big file anyway, but if i try and delete/add a column or row it comes up with an error saying it will take more than 60 seconds to complete the task, and then often says don't have enough memory to do this.

I think the file has had columns/rows formatted all the way to 1million+ but i have unformatted as far as i can see so i don't know what else to try. Do you have any ideas?!

Thank you,
Jo

RE: Excel Not Responding - Action Too Large

Hello Jo,

Thank you for your question. Below are a few issues that cause Excel to be slow or to run out of memory:

1. Excessive cell formatting or styles - check and clear any excessive unnecessary formatting.

2. Large numbers of shapes and images - these increase file size, delete if unnecessary

3. Conditional formatting - check and delete, leave only if critical to the data

4. Formulas which slow down Excel:
Vlookup, Indirect, Offset
Remove unnecessary formulas, replace Vlookup with Index and
Match or Xlookup.

5. Too many filters running on large data. Copy and paste filter
results and clear filters.

6. Delete empty rows and columns - they may contain hidden
formatting or hidden remnants of deleted data.

I hope this helps.

Kind regards

Excel tip:

Viewing Many Worksheets

If there are more worksheets in your workbook than there is room to show all their tabs at the bottom of the screen - Right click on the navigation arrows. A list of all your worksheets is shown. You just click on the one that you want to access. If you have more than 15 worksheets, select in the list and choose your worksheet from hundreds.
