PowerBI mapping between sources

Hi,

I'm a new user to PowerBI and have come up stuck trying to create a new project, as outlined below.

Table 1 has film names in variation (e.g. The Post).
Table 2 has film names in another variation (e.g. Post, The), but also has a unique title number.

I have mapping table from Excel that has the unique title numbers (Table 2) in one column, and the Table 1 film names in the other column.

I’ve added all 3 tables to my PowerBI project, but I am struggling to know how to get them to talk to each other. I’ve created the relationships, but I still can’t pull data from Table 2 using the film names from Table 1.

What am I doing wrong / do I need to create extra measures or columns? Do I need to append queries or something like this?

Thanks!

RE: PowerBI mapping between sources

Hi Alex,

Thank you for the forum question.

How to map tables correctly.

Do you have a many to one relationship between table 1 and table 2. (can you have The Post/Post, The many times in one of the tables and only one time in the second table) .

Do you have a one to one relationship or a many to many.

Please let me know this then I can help you with the mapping.

Kind regards

RE: PowerBI mapping between sources

Hi Jens,

Thanks for the quick response.

In Table 1 and Table 2, I have many instances of each title name. In my mapping file, I have each title and the unique title number just once.

So I have a One/Many relationship between [Mapping] and [Table 1] using the Title Name, and a One/Many relationship between [Mapping] and [Table 2] using the unique Title Numbers.

Thanks,
Alex

RE: PowerBI mapping between sources

Hi Alex,

Then you should be able to get what you want, but your visuals must be grouped by the mapping table.

If you in the two source tables contain the "same" let us say have ticket sales, you do not have related tables you have tables which need to be appended to one table in the query. If you in the query editor append the two tables and relate the mapping table to the table you be able to make the visuals you need.

Excel tip:

Quickly hide and unhide rows and columns

Use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+9 to hide selected rows and Ctrl+0 to hide selected columns. The good thing about this shortcut is that you do not need to select entire rows or columns. For example, select B3:D3 then press Ctrl+0 to hide columns B to D.

Ctrl+Shift+9 unhides rows and Ctrl+Shift+0 unhides columns.
