Paste function
I have an excel workbook that holds the annual data of employee roster, attendance, absence etc.
I have 4 teams of 8 people and I am unable to copy data from the lead member of the team and paste to the rest of the team. I normally give up and just enter the information manually but really would like to understand why I am able to copy nut not paste the data.
RE: Paste function
Hi Hilary
There are many reasons this could be happening, for example, if the computer becomes infected by a virus, changes from a Windows update, system files have corrupted or improper shortcut key settings.
Before going into more detail, could you let me know if this a problem just with data from the lead member, or is it also a problem when you copy and paste data from elsewhere in the spreadsheet too? And does the copy and paste function work normally in other programs such as Word?
Kind Regards,

RE: Paste function
Hi Sarah,
It just seems to be excel work books x 2 - so may be a virus.
Everything else seems to be working fine in all other documents. We have had a lot of IT activity over the last few months so maybe something happened to these work books then.
Have you any suggestions how I can resolve this, or is it a case of creating a new spreadsheet. This workbook carries the attendance registers for the department and the front sheet displays the total for all months of the designated headings.
Best wishes
Hilary
RE: Paste function
As you're in version 2010, let's try a simple fix first.
Excel 2010 can have problems with copying and pasting between 2 documents, depending on how the documents have been opened.
Try opening one Excel file, then going to File, Open, and selecting the second document.
This should open both documents within the same Excel window, and hopefully might fix your issue.
If this doesn't work, let me know and we can go through some more complex trouble-shooting options.

Sarah
RE: Paste function
Tried that it didn't work! :(
RE: Paste function
What a shame!
As this is only affecting two Excel documents it sounds like one of the files is corrupt. This is an issue that is very difficult for us to fix without access to the file itself and a lot of time investigating the problem.
One last thing that could work: Try going to File, Open, then select the file. When you go to click the Open button at the button of the dialogue box, instead click the small drop-down to the right of it. In this drop-down menu select 'Open and Repair...'
Overall, this is not something you're doing wrong, it's an issue intrinsic to the file itself. Depending on how often you're using the data, you might decide to continue manually copying across the data when you need it, or it might be worth recreating the document again from scratch.
Sorry this isn't a perfect answer, and good luck.
Regards,
Sarah

Excel tip:Reconciling a list to correspond with anotherMay have a list that needs to make but on another sheet one list seems to be out, eg. product list one sheet contains all product and inventory data, while the other contains pricing data. Both need to match with all products but there is more products in one list than the other. To find the disparaging product compare data in the two columns that need to match Make sure that order the same way. |
