Allow users to edit protected cells without password
Hi there,
I have a worksheet where I want some cells locked/not readable by certain users and have locked these cells and protected the sheet.
I would like for particular users to be able to edit and read these cells without having to enter a password. I have added these users to the 'Allow Users to Edit Ranges' and added users to 'specify who may edit the range without a password' though when the worksheet is protected the users still need to enter a password.
Can you please help me to set up the worksheet so that cells are blocked only to certain users though not others.
Thanks,
Siobhan
RE: Allow users to edit protected cells without password
Hi Siobhan
Thank you for your question.
It might be to do with your network configuration as this feature depends on a network domain.
Can you let me know the version of Windows you are running on and whether or not your computer logs onto a domain? You might been to check with IT.
When you add the users so that they have permission to edit the ranges are you able to select them from a list or do you have to type in the user names?
If you could let me know I will try and find out more for you.
Kind regards,
Andrew
RE: Allow users to edit protected cells without password
Hi Andrew,
We are on a domain and the file is saves in a shared drive on the domain and the users are chosen from a list. We are currently on a Windows 2008 OS for our domain.
Thanks,
Siobhan
RE: Allow users to edit protected cells without password
Hi Siobhan
Thank you for coming back to me. I have found the Microsoft resource relating to this feature and included the link below:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/excel-help/lock-cells-in-a-worksheet-HA010342979.aspx
I would be inclined to create a brand new document and test with some sample data to eliminate the possibility there is a problem with the file.
Let me if these steps help and if the test produces different results.
Kind regards,
Andrew

RE: Allow users to edit protected cells without password
Hi Andrew,
Thank you for that link, it appears to have worked which is great news. I was wondering if you knew whether it was possible to hide the contents of locked cells from particular users but not others?
Thank you,
Siobhan

RE: Allow users to edit protected cells without password
Hi Siobhan
Thanks for letting us know - I'm not aware of a way of controlling visibility of data. The hide setting in protection for example will hide the formula not the result. I am sorry I can't be of further help. Please do let us know if you have any other questions.
Kind regards,
Andrew
