I have experienced problems where I have locked a cell which picks a formula up from a separate spreadsheet. The formula does not carry through into the locked cell. Please can you explain why.

Many thanks

RE: protection

Hi Sharon,

Thank you for your question and welcome to the forum.

I am replying to ask you for some more clarity on the issue you face. This is my understanding:

1. You have entered a formula in one spreadsheet referencing another value in a cell in another worksheet within the same workbook or another workbook.

2. You have then protected the sheet with a password.

3. Is it the case that you can't see the formula in the formula bar?

4. If you right click over the cell with the formula in and go to Format Cells. Go to the Protection tab and see if the Hidden checkbox is empty.

I would really appreciate a bit more detail in order to answer your question please.

Regards

Simon

RE: protection

Hi Simon

I don't think I made it very clear. I think the problem may be with compatability as the file is made in an earlier version and opened in compatability mode. Basically, I have a workbook picking up datafrom different tabs - eg = worksheet cell ref. I have locked and protected the cell, and the data doesn't always flow through when you enter in the tab it is picking up from.

Excel tip:

How to Spell Check an Excel 2010 Worksheet

Excel 2010 does not automatically spell check a document. So, here's how to manually spell check a worksheet.

Either select the ''Review'' tab in the Ribbon, go to the ''Proofing'' section and click ''Spelling.'' Or, simply press F7.
