If you have formatted a spreadsheet and several cells are highlighted that fall in your criteria, but they are scattered, so you cannot list them, is there a way to see how many cells are highlighted?

Thank you for your question regarding formatting in Excel.
In Excel 2007 and 2010 you can sort or filter by colour. However, in 2003 you cannot do this. I presume you have certain criteria that you apply to the formatted cells and I would suggest that you try to create a filter using the same criteria.
