Linking a database up with xe.com

It would be really useful to beable to tie up a database with xe.com, so that it brings in exchange rates...

RE: Linking a database up with xe.com

Hi Nicholas, thanks for your query. The quickest way to do this would be to use Excel to perform a web query. On a new spreadsheet click the Data tab and choose "From Web" on the left hand side. In the browser that appears type in the xe.com web address and click Go. The website should appear. Look for a yello arrow top left of the page and click it so it selects the entire page. Then click import, choose a single cell from which to build the page and click OK.

The result will be a mess, because the xe.com website has nested the exchange rates, making them more difficult to get to. However, if you scroll down you should find the rates have been brought onto the sheet in the form of a table. You next task is to link this spreadsheet into you access database as usual. The web query in Excel will refresh every time you open the spreadsheet, thereby transporting the latest rates into Access.

Try looking for a different, simpler site (try Yahoo Finance) to get the exchange rates. You want the yellow arrow to only select the single table you're interested in, not really the entire page.

Hope this helps,

Anthony

Access tip:

Choosing data types in Access

Not sure which data type to use for your Access fields? Here are some guidelines to help you choose a data type to assign to a field.

- The Text data type can accept up to 255 characters. For information that will be recorded in paragraphs, use Memo.

- Also use Text for numbers that aren't going to be used in calculations, e.g. phone numbers.

- Use the Currency data type for monetary amounts.

- Use Date/Time for dates.

- Most other numbers can use the Number data type, but the Field Size property may have to be altered.

- For fields that have only two alternatives (yes, no) use Yes/No data type. If there is likely to be a third entry option (e.g. maybe or don't know) use Text instead.
