Comparison for imported data

I am trying to make a comparison between two sets of data, however the unique data are numbers formated as text. I seem to be unable to reformat the numbers to numbers rather than text.
I have tried to use a pivot table to eleminate duplications then a VLOOKUP to make the comparison but it keeps coming up with errors. Am I using the correct tools?
How would you suggest I proceed?

RE: Comparison for imported data

Hi Tina, thanks for your query. Sounds a lot like your source data needs to be "washed", i.e. reformatted so it can be used correctly. Your workarounds are good, but if all else fails use conditional formatting to highlight duplicates or copy and paste the data into Word and do a document comparison.

Hope this helps,

Anthony
