Calculation Field
I can create a formula for Text 1 / Text 2 = Text 3 where Text 3 is a duration. Is there a means of putting this duration directly into the Duration field other than by copy & pasting Text 3 into the Duration Field?

RE: Copy Picture

Hello Chris,

Hope you enjoyed your Microsoft Project Intro Intermediate course with Best STL.

Thank you for your question regarding working with calculated fields.

Please give me details of the text fields you have created. The easiest way is to email a copy of the project file to me at rl@stl-training.co.uk

After I have examined your file I will be in a better position to come up with a solution to your problem.

I look forward to your response.

Have a great day.

RE: Copy Picture

Hello Chris,

Thanks for sending me your sample file.

I have examined the file and cannot find a way to convert your Text3 field into the Duration field other than copying and pasting. So, to automate this I created a macro which when run automatically copies and pastes all values from the Text3 field into the Duration field.

The macro is called InsertsDuration and can be selected and run from Tools > Macro > Macros.

The macro and can also be added to any toolbar to make the task easier to work with. To add the macro to a toolbar do the following:

1) Right-click any toolbar and select Customise at the bottom
2) Select the Commands tab and select All Macros on the left side
3) From the right side select the InsertsDuration macro and with the left mouse button held down, drag the macro to whichever toolbar you would like to add it to
4) Right-click the macro you have just added to the toolbar
5) Select a button image from the Select Button Image section
6) Click Close

To add the macro to the Global.mpt file for use on other projects which contain the same custom fields, click Tools > Organiser then select the Modules tab. Select the macro on the right-side and click the copy button which will copy the macro to the Global.mpt file.

Incidentally, it is not necessary to assign the Standard calendar to each task as this is done autmatically from the Project information dialogue box which you would have learned during your training course.

If you require a special calendar with unusual settings which will then be assigned to various tasks, create a new calendar based on the Standard calendar, make your changes to it and then assign the new calendar to whichever tasks need to use it.

I have attached a file which I have added the macro to.

Have fun with this!

I hope this resolves your question. If it has, please mark this question as resolved.

If you require further assistance, please reply to this post. Or perhaps you have another Microsoft Office question?

Have a great day.

MS Project tip:

Link tasks using predecessor column - project

a. First, note ID number of the task you want to link to (predecessor). Then, in the predecessor column of the task you want to link to (successor), type the predecessor task's ID number.
b. The link will be a Finish to Start (the default type).
c. Or you can add in a code for a different relationship type
i. SS = Start to Start
ii. FF = Finish to Finish
iii. SF = Start to Finish
d. You don't have to type the task ID numbers in any specific order, but you must separate multiple tasks with commas.
