Template change

I have created a templated and have been working from this. I have now decided that I need to have 2 templates, is there any way I can change the template that a created .html file looks to for updates?

RE: Template change

Hi Lorraine,

I think I understand what you mean.

First of all, you'll need to create the second template. I assume you've already done this? Usually this would be created from scratch, or you can open your original template and go File -> Save As Template. Then make changes.

Then, you can open individual files you wish to switch, and choose the command Modify -> Templates -> Apply template to page. Then choose your new template. If you have any different editable regions, Dreamweaver will ask you to assign where the content from the page should go within the new template.

If you wish to update all pages using a particular template, you can choose Modify -> Templates -> Update Pages... then change 'Look in' to 'Files that use...' and select the template from the dialogue box, then click Start. Note that saving a template should also prompt this 'update all pages that use this template' command.

These are the commands for Dreamweaver MX. They may be in different menus in Dreamweaver 8, but they'll be there somewhere.

Do let us know how you get on with this. Also, if this solves your query, please mark the question as resolved.

Regards, Rich

Dreamweaver tip:

Xhtml vs html

When using dreamwear template or just creating a blank webpage, you are able to select the markup language you want to use. The main choices are either xhtml or html. It is now best to select xhtml as this will translate all the html into xml, so it is transmitted across the web in xml format. One of the main advantages of this is that it makes the site that you build much more compatible with the range of different web browsers that exist.
