Duration times

I am having a few problems with the duration column of my project. For the main tasks, the duration is automatically calculated and it is creating parts of a day, I frequently am seeing numbers in days such as 619.88 and 98.63.

When the project is viewed on reader software it shows that specific times have been allocated, so for example, for one task where I have allocated one day on my version, in the reader it shows it has been allocated in hours from 11am to 2pm.

However when I go back to my version I can't see hours that have been allocated, or how to rectify the problem. I have no need to go into the detail of time frames, I only need days and weeks, not hours.

I would be grateful if you could help me to amend this problem,

Hi Madeline

Thank you for your question. It could be down to a mismatch between the Calendar hours (set by going to Tools > Change working time) and the default hours (see Tools > Options > Calendar). If the working time set for a day is different to how many hours Project thinks are contained in a day's work then your tasks will not align neatly and you may get odd fractions of days.

Be very careful though. It is not as simple as just changing the numbers in these two areas to make it all fit again, particularly if tasks have been added since those settings have been changed. Always take a backup before making edits of this kind.

If you take a look at these settings on your project are the number of hours available in a calendar day the same as those set in Tools > options > calendar.

One last thing to check on the same tab - do the default hours (start and finish) also align with your standard calendar.

Inserting Task Durations Quickly

When entering durations for your tasks simply use the single letters - m for min, h for hr, d for day, w for week, but mon for month. If default is set for days, you need only type the number, for example 3 for 3days, or 0.5 for half a day.
