Linking project plans

Can you link projects which have different hours on the standard calendar? For example, can I insert my project plan based on a 35 hour working week into our master plan based on a 40 hour week?

RE: linking project plans

Hi Nicola

Thank you for your question. You can insert a project set to have 7 hours per day into a master project plan that runs with 8 hours per day. The settings in the master project prevail so that a 1 day task that looks fine on the 7 hours per day project will appear as having a duration of .88 of a day in the master project.

It's worth testing this out with a couple of temporary files to see if this will be useful to you or not.

The setting that controls this can be found in Tools > Options >Calendar then look for the hours per day setting.

I hope this helps - do let us know if you have any further questions.

Kind regards,

Andrew

MS Project tip:

Set default task type - Project 2010

a. In Project, click on the File tab
b. Select Options from left hand side
c. Click on Schedule to set the scheduling options
d. Set the Default Task type box to your chosen option
i. Generally if you plan/estimate your projects using durations you should use fixed duration, and untick the box New tasks are effort driven, if you plan/estimate with person hours use fixed work, or for plans estimated with the proportion of resources time use fixed units, and untick the box New tasks are effort driven)
e. Click OK to apply your changes
