TOCs

How do you keep your setting on the TOC options.

RE: TOCs

Hi Heather

Thank you for your question - I will investigate the problem with TOCs resetting when edited and see if there is a way to modify without resorting to Macros.

Kind regards,
Andrew

RE: TOCs

Hi Heather

Thank you for your patience. I think I have found an answer for you.

It involves telling Word that the style you would like to apply for Heading 1 items in your TOC is in fact Heading 1 level, rather than having to go into the Options dialog box and type Level 1 beside your custom style in the list.

Try this. On the Home ribbon use the style gallery to find your custom style then right click on it. From the menu that appears choose Modify.

At the bottom of the dialogue box click on Format then choose paragraph. Finally make sure the Indents and Spacing tab is displayed. At the top, there is a drop down box called Outline Level. It is probably set to Body Text. Set it to the level corresponding where it should appear in your Table of Contents (eg. Level 1).

Now when you insert a TOC text styled with your custom style will automatically appear at the correct level within the Table of Contents. The only thing to watch out for is make sure you don't use the built in Heading 1 style as well as they will both appear at the Level 1 position in your TOC.

You can open the Table of Contents dialog box without having to re-attach the custom styles to Levels 1, 2, 3 etc.

I hope this helps - let me know how you get on or if you have have any questions.

Kind regards,
Andrew
