Updating of linked worksheets

when opening a linked workbook, how do you select the manually update (default is auto)? i.e when a source has changed.

RE: Updating of linked worksheets

Hello Rob

Thank you for your question and welcome to the forum.

If you wish to update the links in a file manually, you can set this up by going through Edit-Links. This option will also stop the update prompt from appearing when the file is opened.

To suppress the message and leave the links (not updated) until you choose to update them, follow these steps:

1. Go to Edit-Links.
2. Click the Startup Prompt button.
3. Select the 'Don't display the alert and don't update automatic links' option.

This choice affects all users of the workbook. However, this choice applies only to that particular workbook.

When you want to update the links:
1. Go to Edit-Links.
2. Click Update Values.
3. Click Close.

I hope this helps.

Kind regards
Amanda

RE: Updating of linked worksheets

Many thanks for your reply Amanda, which was very useful.

However I don't think my query was very clear. What I would like to know is related to the pop-up box that comes up when you click on Edit-Links.

When this box appears there is an option at the bottom where it says 'Update:' either for Automatic or Manual to be selected. The default is always 'Automatic' and I wondered how and why you would select 'Manual' as this is always greyed out.

Thanks
Rob

RE: Updating of linked worksheets

Hi Rob

My apologies for misunderstanding the question.

I did a bit of research on this, apparently Manual option you were asking about is not related to updating links between Excel files, it is for linking objects between applications (e.g. if you linked to a chart in Word or PowerPoint).

There you go, mystery solved :)

Kind regards
Amanda

Great, thanks!

Excel tip:

Calculate age or service

The DATEDIF() function in Excel calculates the number of days, months, or years between two dates. So, this function makes it easy to calculate a person's age. To try this tip:

In a blank worksheet, type the birth date in cell A1, using slashes to separate day, month, and year.
In cell A2, type =DATEDIF(A1,TODAY(),"y") and press ENTER.
