How can I allow access to a document but only allow people to make basic changes without changing any formulas? Do I have to protect each cell or can I set something for the whole document?
Thanks

RE: Permissions

Hello Karen

Thank you for your question and welcome to the forum.

You can apply protection to a whole worksheet, however if you would like people to still be able to change the data in certain cells on the sheet, then you will need to unlock these cells first before applying protection to the worksheet.

To unlock cells:
1. Select the cells that you want people to be able to edit/change.
2. Go to Format-Cells, Protection tab, and unchecked the Locked checkbox. Click OK.

To apply protection:
1. Go to Tools - Protection - Protect Sheet.
2. Set a password if you wish (this means people will have to know the password to remove the protection and thereby be able to change any cell in the spreadsheet).

Once the protection is applied, you should only be able to edit the cells that have been unlocked.

I hope this helps.

Kind regards
Amanda

Excel tip:

Create a hyperlink navigation sheet

In large files, it is often useful to have a front sheet with hyperlinks to the key databases and summary calculations in your spreadsheet. Hyperlinks can save you and (more importantly) those less familiar with your spreadsheet a great deal of pointless scrolling between and within sheets.

Hyperlinks appear as underlined text and can jump to any cell or range name in your file. You can also use hyperlinks to jump to other files.

To create a hyperlink to a location in the active workbook: (1) Select the cell that contains the text you want to use as the hyperlink and choose Insert|Hyperlink.(2)Click Place in this document.(3)Choose the sheet you want to link to or the range name from the list of "Defined Names".(4)If necessary, type the cell reference in the Type in the cell reference box. (5) Click OK.
