' in cells

I might need to provide examples for this but it happens a lot that we receive spreadsheets that look fine, but when I click on a cell, a little ' appears before the value. When I click somewhere else the ' is not displayed anymore. This seems to affect Vlookups when comparing cells with ' and cells without...
Using 'delete', 'paste special' doesn't seem to remove that '.

RE: ' in cells

Hello Cedric

Thank you for your question and welcome to the forum.

The numbers you see with the ' in front of them would have been typed into the cells in that way on purpose.

What this does is that it ensures that the number is stored as text, rather than a number. This will affect VLOOKUPs, as noted in Excel Help on VLOOKUPs:

Remarks
When searching text values in the first column of table_array, ensure that the data in the first column of table_array does not have leading spaces, trailing spaces, inconsistent use of straight ( ' or " ) and curly (

Excel tip:

Change the default location for opening and saving spreadsheets

If you are always opening spreadsheets from and/or saving documents to a specific location that is not My Documents, save time by setting this folder as the default for opening files from and saving files to.

Here's how:
1. Go to Tools - Options.

2. Select the General tab.

3. Enter the pathname of the folder you wish to make the default in the Default File Location box (hint: it will be easier to use Windows Explorer to navigate to this folder, then copy and paste the pathname from the address bar at the top of the Windows Explorer screen).

4. Click OK.

You have now changed the default folder for opening and saving spreadsheets.
