Sorry for not getting back to you before

The answer to this is sort your data by the date column
then click the sort assending toolbar button

then go to the data menu - and subtotal - choose date from at each change in

choose a count function as this will tell you how many there are - you will need this to do what you want as most of the other function are for number function
