Thank you for your post: in answer:
The VLOOKUP function is used to extract information from data that is stored in a series of columns. Excel uses a lookup value which you type into a particular cell in the worksheet - to search for the value you have typed.
The syntax for a VLOOKUP is as follows: : =vlookup(search cell, database, column) to extract information from a specific point where row and column meet dependant upon the information in the search cell. I hope that has helped, regards Pete

Excel tip:

Switch on smart tags – Excel 2007

In order to use smart tags, make sure they are turned on, to do this:
1. Click on ‘Microsoft Office‘ button and then click on ‘Excel Options‘.
2. Click on ‘Proofing‘ category and then click on ‘Auto Correct Options‘.
3. In the ‘Auto Correct‘ dialogue box appears, click the ‘Smart Tags‘ Tab.
4. Tick the boxes, next to the Smart Tags you wish to use in Excel
