Dreamweaver plug ins for UGC

Can you recommend a free plug in for User Generated Content that would work with Dreamweaver?

Can you recommend a free plug in for Content Management designed to work with Dreamweaver?

RE: Dreamweaver plug ins for UGC

Vanessa,

For UGC, it all depends on your web site and also your web server.

There are lots of types of UGC, and I'm not aware of any 'all in one' solution.

I don't want to be a boring Wikipedia quoter, but their page on UGC is a good starting point: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User-generated_content

The easiest thing to do is add a blog or forum to your site.

Other ideas would be customer reviews and testimonials for products or services you offer; web applications on your web site that users can contribute to (think 'facebook'!); and photo album/graphic/video upload sections.

For CMS, well, there are heaps!

You could use Contribute, which is produced by Adobe and works hand in hand with Dreamweaver (includes off line editing).

You can try http://www.contenteditable.com - the editor only works in IE, but apparently the content, once published, can be viewed in all browsers.

RE: Dreamweaver plug ins for UGC

Hi Rich

On the subject of UGC, it's my fault for not being more specific. I have already read the Wiki description and I have got a specific use in mind. I want to do two things:

1 allow people to add things into an events diary
2 something along the lines of Facebook or on line dating - giving the ability to upload pictures and personal details on a form and interact with other members via the site.

Thanks
Vanessa

RE: Dreamweaver plug ins for UGC

Vanessa,

Normally, you would go to a web developer and ask them to program these types of things for you, if you want it fully customisable. This, of course, comes at a price.

May I suggest http://www.bravenet.com which offer a lot of online interactivity tools for free.

Calendar (includes allowing visitors to add events):

Photo uploads:
http://www.bravenet.com/webtools/photocenter/

Chat rooms:

Otherwise, for a more customised site 'package', you may want to try http://www.skadate.com or http://www.datingpro.com/dating

Or, do what facebook did, and write your own software (ie. get programmers to do it for you, perhaps at http://www.elance.com or similar). This may entail a simple MySQL database running on PHP platform, for example.

Regards, Rich

Dreamweaver tip:

Xhtml vs html

When using dreamwear template or just creating a blank webpage, you are able to select the markup language you want to use. The main choices are either xhtml or html. It is now best to select xhtml as this will translate all the html into xml, so it is transmitted across the web in xml format. One of the main advantages of this is that it makes the site that you build much more compatible with the range of different web browsers that exist.
