Contents page

I'm working on a 50 page document. How do I create a contents page, and ensure that when text is moved around, the correct number is displayed on that contents page?

RE: Contents page

Hi Hilary,

Thank you for your post, and welcome to the forum, sorry its been so long for an answer, but busy, busy has been the word.

To answer your question, creating a contents page very much depends on your document, you must have headings in place which have been generated from the Document Styles and Formatting options, you can create these quite easily and quickly if you change to Outline view. (View>Outline). Select your headings 1 - 9 levels and apply the formatting styles as required. In Outline view you can review your different levels by choosing to display level options, another way is to use the Document Map option to view heading levels.

Once you have your headings in place you can then invoke the Menu command. Insert>Reference>Index and Tables, from the dialog box which displays choose Table of Contents and select as required, Note the Options and Modify buttons, check them out.

When you are satisfied with your choices click the OK button to have your Table of Contents inserted at the Cursor point. (Should have mentioned that earlier) (TOC will insert at the cursor position).

Now to the second part of your question:

If you move the text around in your document the TOC which is a static field will not update, however after you have completed your moving you can select some of the entries, and then right click on your selection and from the dialog box which opens choose Update Field, Then Update entire Table, Clicking OK will update the entire TOC to reflect your changes.

I hope that has helped, if so please click the resolved link, regards Pete

Word tip:

Displaying tables in columns

How do you display two tables adjacent to each other on a page that has two columns?

1. Insert two tables as you normally would.

2. Adjust column widths in each table so that the total width of each table is less than half the width of the page.

3. Highlight both tables.

4. Click the Columns button (on the Standard toolbar), then select 2 Columns.
