V Look Up

Why are the values sometimes not recognised when you look up a value from another spreadsheet?

RE: v Look Up - from other spreadsheet

Dear Victoria

Thank you for attending Excel Advanced course. I hope you enjoyed the course and have also started using the topics that were covered in the course.

The answer to your question depends on how you are applying the Vlookup. If you try to copy and paste the answer of one Lookup function from one cell to another from one workbook to another please remember that the absolute referencing (the dollar signs within cells) is applied by default so sometimes it is important to remove the dollar signs to make the cells relative. This is specially relevant when you decide to copy and paste the Vlookup function to other cells.

If your question was more specific then I would request you to provide an example and I should be able to look into it.

I hope you are aware of the Relative and Absolute referencing. If you have further questions about them then you may want to ask that as a separate post or you can reply to this post.
I hope this has answered your query.

If this has answered your query then I would request you to please mark the question as resolved!! If not and you have a specific question related to this then please post it as a new question and we should be able to provide you the solution for it!!

Excel tip:

Create a hyperlink navigation sheet

In large files, it is often useful to have a front sheet with hyperlinks to the key databases and summary calculations in your spreadsheet. Hyperlinks can save you and (more importantly) those less familiar with your spreadsheet a great deal of pointless scrolling between and within sheets.

Hyperlinks appear as underlined text and can jump to any cell or range name in your file. You can also use hyperlinks to jump to other files.

To create a hyperlink to a location in the active workbook: (1) Select the cell that contains the text you want to use as the hyperlink and choose Insert|Hyperlink.(2)Click Place in this document.(3)Choose the sheet you want to link to or the range name from the list of "Defined Names".(4)If necessary, type the cell reference in the Type in the cell reference box. (5) Click OK.
