how do you trace errors

RE: errors, formulae, split frames

Hi Gill

Thank you for your question.

The Trace Precedents feature can be used to help ascertain where an error in a formula may have arisen from.

To use this, bring up the Formula Auditing toolbar on your screen. Then select the cell containing the formula producing the error; and click the Trace Precedents button on the Formula Auditing toolbar. A series of arrows will appear on the spreadsheet, indicating which cells are supplying data to the cell with the erroneous formula. If you click the Trace Precdents button again, this should show you which cells are supplying data to the cells indicated by the first set of arrows.

Once you have been able to determine what is causing the error, you can remove the arrows from your screen by clicking the Remove All Arrows button on the Formula Auditing toolbar.

Excel tip:

Change the Value of a Constant

When using a named constant in a worksheet, you may wish to change the value of that constant.

From the 'Insert' menu, select 'Name', then select 'Define'.

In the 'Define Name' dialog box, select the constant that you want to change.
Change the value in the 'Refers To' box.
Click OK.

Wherever that named constant has been used it will now use its new value.
