Making pages compatible with all browsers

What's the best way to ensure my dreamweaver pages will display correctly in all browser? I can get something looking perfect in IE and then I'll look in Firefox and the formatting with have altered. I know Dreamweaver has a browser check function but I'm not sure of the best way to use this?
